Working in the studio at Tailored Brands. I digitech and assist in the TB studio for brands including Men’s Wearhouse, Jos A Bank, Joseph Abboud, and K&G Superstores.

I’m a photographer, Phase One Certified digitech, photo assistant, and retoucher based in San Francisco, working as a local in both San Francisco and Los Angeles.

What I do

Controller of chaos. Guardian of gaff tape. I don’t wear a cape, but I’m deeply committed to helping the world’s best photographers create incredible images, have fun, and keep things running smoothly and on time.

My production clients include The New York Times, The North Face, Men’s Wearhouse, Whole Foods, and Samsung, and my clients as a photographer have included Facebook, WarnerMedia, Bumble & bumble.

I primarily digitech in Capture One or Lightroom, but I often 1st or 2nd assist. I offer a lightweight Profoto B10 / A1 location lighting package along with a full complement of grip and support, and I can coordinate rentals (including pickups and returns) for larger orders with local rental houses like Samy’s. I’ve used a variety of lighting gear onset ranging from Broncolor and ARRI to Dynalites and Paul Buff Einsteins … but about 90% of the time (including in my own shooting) you’ll find me working with Profoto gear.

I offer onsite editing and post-production support including retouching. Other software that is commonly part of my workflow includes Chronosync for backups, Adobe Photoshop/Bridge/LR, and PhotoMechanic for high volume photo ingestion.

I’ve also served as a studio intern/apprentice to McNair Evans, a fine art and documentary photographer and 2016 Guggenheim Fellow, and I teach for a local photography school called Isla Studio.

Photographers I’ve assisted (category listings are based on the main types of shoots I’ve helped with for each photographer)

Digitech / 1st Assisting

As your digitech, I'm ready to protect the integrity of your shoot and make sure you and your client have a smooth experience, whether we’re in the studio or on location.   I'm a Phase One Certified Professional and comfortable tethering in C1, Lightroom, and more. And I’m also happy to work as your 1st assistant if you have the digitech role covered already.

Production Services

I offer a range of pre- and post-production services including location scouting, lighting assisting, production coordination, and business development / outreach. I also provide retouching services.

Behind the Scenes (BTS)

Whether for your web site or social media, I can create great images of you creating great images, without ever getting in the way.

Some projects I’ve worked on

Personal work

A Death at Hites Cove is a forthcoming photo essay about the loss of a firefighter in an equipment rollover accident in a remote Sierra town and his friend’s efforts to honor him weeks later by building a car for the town’s 50th annual demolition derby.  I spent 10 days living with and documenting the derby drivers and learning more about life in this modern frontier town, its inhabitants’ precarious relationships with machines and nature in their daily lives, and the area’s legacy as a once-booming gold mining district.

I post occasionally about projects I'm working on over on Instagram (@j_robinson).
